Keeping down the cost of your motor bike insurance

Wed, 15 Feb 2012

It is probably true to say that no biker enjoys playing more for their motor bike insurance than they may have to.

What some people occasionally overlook though, is that they may be able to exert a moderate degree of control over the cost of their motorcycle insurance policy:

  • insurance providers typically welcome any indication that you are either taking steps to reduce the risks of a claim or sharing some of the risks associated with the provision of the cover;
  • one such example may be the use of additional security devices, such as specialised immobilisers and tracking devices;
  • a similar illustration may be if you are able to show that your bike is garaged overnight when not in use - sometimes even being able to show that it is parked on a driveway may be better received, in cost terms, than simply saying it is parked on the public street overnight;
  • the cost of your motor bike insurance may also be significantly affected by some of your personal attributes, notably your age, riding experience, the type of bike you are seeking to insure and whether or not you have a clean licence - although you obviously cannot make yourself older, riding less powerful machines and keeping a clean licence may both have a dramatic effect in reducing the price of your motorcycle insurance quotes;
  • a significant factor in reducing the cost of your motorcycle cover is typically the no claims discount - this may be something that is worth protecting at all costs (within reason) and it may be worth thinking carefully before making claims for relatively small amounts, which may put this significant discount at risk in future;
  • some providers of motor bike insurance offer specialised areas of cover, including things such as classic bike insurance, convicted bike insurance multi bike cover, younger or older rider insurance, female rider insurance, moped cover and so on - if you and your bike come into one of these specialised categories, you may find it cost-effective to look for a corresponding specialised policy;
  • as a general principle, the more you use your bike (in mileage terms) then statistically the greater the likelihood may be of you having an accident that results in a subsequent claim, therefore, trying to keep your annual mileage down to sensible levels may enable you to save money overall on your annual motor bike insurance premium.
