MCN Letter of the Week

Hello MCN
I visited my local Suzuki Dealer on Friday as I felt it was time to book my pride and joy in for the Frame Recall. John on the service desk at Sheffield Motorcycle Centre was very helpful, he explained that he would need my bike for a full day to access it. He told the frame would be sprayed with a crack detecting lacquer and then if it was cracked the frame would be replaced, if not a safety brace fitted. He also said there was no time limit at present on when this work needed to be done. I arranged to take my bike down to
SMC and left feeling well looked after....? Then, I thought to myself, but am I...?
If I had ridden my bike hard, wheelies/stunts etc, I could of cracked the frame and Suzuki will give me a brand new one.....sweet.
But if I have ridden my bike lets say in a more sensible manner it`s more likely that the frame won`t be replaced, a safety brace fitted and the resale value (which I feel must already be effected new frame or not) being pence rather than pounds.
Who in their right mind will buy a second hand K5/6 1000 now, if there are 2 bikes in a showroom 1. new frame 2. safety brace which one are you going to purchase, if any, is it me or is Mr Don`t Wheelie gets to keep his could crack at any moment frame, Mr Wheelie gets a brand new one. Lets get it straight
I have nothing against people who wheelie, but as Suzuki put it the pulling of wheelies/stunts is reckless and illegal when performed on public roads, but if you have a cracked frame we will give you a new one and Mr sensible gets a brace and his bike is worth SQUAT.
I`m sorry but I don`t get it...! I would of sold my bike normally by this time this year and traded in for a new one. I can`t bring myself to ask a dealer what it`s worth. Thanks to the good old credit crunch I will be keeping it. I didn`t have braces on my teeth when I was a kid, but I bet I`ll be have one on my Gixer..!
Best regards
Carl Denton
