Faster than F1 comes to Mallory Park
Mon, 05 Oct 2009
A RALLYCROSS Supercar will go from 0-60mph in 1.9seconds - faster than a Formula 1 car - and you will be able to see it for yourself when the Kumho Tyres MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with the Mirror comes to Mallory Park for the first time on Sunday, October 18th.
Anyone that takes out a CIA motorcycle insurance policy automatically receives a £5 discount voucher to visit Mallory Park – another great benefit from CIA Insurance when you are looking for cheap bike insurance.
With more than 550bhp, four-wheel drive and sophisticated electronics packed into a stripped out car no bigger than a Ford Fiesta hatchback, the cars are absolutely incredible to behold. Race winner and upcoming future champion Liam Doran said: “The two-litre turbocharged engines are restricted to around 550bhp but with the electronics we can still go from a standstill to 100mph in just three seconds. There is nothing faster on four wheels apart from a dragster but they can’t go round corners.”
Being Rallycross, the cars are also designed to go off-road and the new 1-mile long circuit at Mallory Park features fast off-road as well as technical turns to challenge the drivers, not to mention using some parts of the Tarmac track as well. “The circuit is very nice with technical and fast parts,” enthused Liam. “It has a mix of everything and is very fast – it will surprise some of the drivers with just how fast it is, you need to be very committed. The great thing is there are overtaking places just about everywhere, it’s a very nice circuit.”
The Supercars will go through practice, three qualifying heats, an A and B final and then a Super final when they take to the track. They are supported by the Supermodified, Stock Hatch, RX150 buggies and Junior Rallycross classes that together produce 60-races on the single day for an action packed day of family entertainment.
“It is the first time Mallory Park has hosted Rallycross since 1979,” said circuit General Manager John Ward. “It is one of the most spectacular sports and has the very fastest accelerating race cars in the world; it puts F1 firmly in its place. We hope that this most exciting motorsport will appeal to petrol-heads and families alike and the midlands location of the circuit will draw a big crowd.”
Track action starts at 0930 on 18th October at Mallory Park with the racing starting at 1000. Two-time Champion Pat Doran (father of Liam) has already claimed the title but the racing will be fierce in the £200,000 cars to end the season on a high and the other Championships all must decide the driver finishing positions. Tickets cost just £15 per adult and children under the age of 12 are free – with an open pit lane and plenty of family entertainment and refreshments on site as well.
