Dainese airbag technology is coming for road riders
Tue, 20 Oct 2009
WHEN Jorge Lorenzo crashed out of Sunday’s Australian MotoGP at high speed his leather suit protected him with an internal airbag deploying as he hit the ground at over 100mph.
Italian firm Dainese is pioneering the technology that is more usually associated with car protection but is now making its mark in the bike world.
The system is still being developed and so far appears to be getting the thumbs up from Dainese’s racers who are using and in some cases frequently testing its abilities. Lorenzo walking away with only minor injuries from such a high speed crash augers well for the system.
A D-Air Street version of the suit is expected to go on sale in the 2011 Dainese collection and will no doubt prove popular with bikers that value their skin.
